The Freedom Number (also called a "Financial Freedom Number" or "FIRE Number") is the total portfolio value you need to support your desired lifestyle indefinitely. It's calculated using the safe withdrawal rate rule, which suggests you can safely withdraw a certain percentage of your portfolio annually without running out of money.
The most common approach is the 4% rule, which assumes you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) for a 30-year retirement with a high probability of success. This is based on historical market data and research by William Bengen.
Example: If you need R50,000/month (R600,000/year) and use the 4% rule, you'd need a portfolio of R15,000,000 (R600,000 ÷ 0.04).
